West Seattle Home – Seattle, WA

We designed a new residence for this family of four on their existing, well-loved property in West Seattle. The family had outgrown their 1923 home, but moving away from the private corner lot featuring majestic western views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Range framed by towering firs and cedars was not an option. Respect of the existing trees and their protection zones led to the vertical design of the new house. The major spaces were organized around a four-story light filled staircase and situated to maximize the western views and capture morning and afternoon sun while still maintaining privacy. As the landscape matures, it is intended that the house will draw back and become visually one with the forested lot maintaining a quiet presence in the urban forest.
